Let It Go

When the first Frozen movie was in theaters, I saw it three (yes, THREE!) times. By the third time, I was quietly singing along to all of the songs, annoying anyone who was unfortunate enough to be close enough to hear me. My favorite scene was always when Elsa sang “Let It Go.” I loved watching Elsa find strength in something that she had always considered a weakness and remind us that sometimes, we just need to let it go. It’s been almost 7 years since the first Frozen movie was released, but I think the message of “Let It Go” is more relevant today than ever.

I don’t know about you all, but I am a planner. I like to plan things out, whether that’s little things like when I’m going to do my homework or much bigger things, like when I’m going to get married, what job I’ll have in the future, or where I’ll go to medical school. The problem with planning, however, is that more often than not, my plans don’t work out how I thought they would. Do you know when my plans REALLY haven’t turned out how I thought they would? During this global pandemic! Not only has it been stressful trying to plan anything during this time, but it’s also brought on a lot of anxiety. I’m worried about my family members staying safe, I’m worried about trying to learn some pretty intense subjects online, I’m worried about making connections with new people, and I’m worried about how we’ll be able to recruit new members for SAO since we can’t do a lot of the in-person PR that we normally would do. Sometimes, I get so caught up in worrying that I forget a very important truth: God is in control.

I know I’m not the only one who feels this way, so I think we could all use the reminder to “Let It Go.” We need to let go of the idea that we can control everything, and we need to let go of the anxieties that come with not being able to control everything. In Philippians 4:6-7, we are told, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” As we’re moving through this time of uncertainty, we need to remember that God has it all under control.

One of my favorite lyrics from “Let It Go” is the line “It’s funny how some distance makes everything seem small.” Not only does it make sense literally (the farther away you are from something, the smaller it looks), but it also works spiritually. When we lift our problems up to God, we distance ourselves from them and start to realize that they aren’t as big as we thought they were, and even if they still seem pretty big, we aren’t alone in handling them. So, if you’ve been feeling anxious and worried a lot, take a few minutes to talk to God about what is making you feel this way, and lift those worries up to Him.

I know starting a new school year can be really stressful, especially if it’s freshman year of college. All of us in SAO want to remind you that you are so loved, and you aren’t alone. If you’re looking for a community of women who share your Christian ideals, you’ve come to the right place!
